surface
Surface of a tree log- has variety of colours in hue and value.
The surface of the buildings are similar in hue but the angles and lighting makes an interesting composition. 
Surface/volume: surface of a lake reflecting the fall foliage. illuminant
Variety of neon lights with the combination of tail lights create an interesting scene.

Illumination
The photos of the bed were taken just a few seconds apart with the same camera setting. In the top photo a cloud passed in front of the sun, and the bottom photo is in full sunlight.
film/volume
Examples of volume and film: fish tank, water bottle and view of the city from the Staten Island Ferry on a foggy day.
SURFACE
Surface softness is conveyed by the way the light reflects off individual hairs.
Like the cat, individual threads are illuminated in this picture - highlighting the soft nubby texture of the material.
Close- up of nupastels: The way the light is distributed over the surface of this material shows its unique smooth and vulnerable surface.
